AIK Race Team

Our AIK Race Team pilot program was a huge success last season. This run club was developed for kids grade 5-7.  Our hope was that we could make running fun and have older kids mentor younger ones in an established KM Club at Pitt Meadows Elementary School.

The Mentor Program is an October-June program. The membership fee is $50 and includes set workouts throughout the year, a RACE TEAM custom t-shirt, many opportunities to workout with and/or meet Professional, Elite and Olympic athletes, opportunities to race 1-5k community races and fun runs, opportunity to develop leadership skills and become more fit while running in a positive group setting.

Our Mentor program has been supported by the Runners Den (Pt. Moody). All workouts have been modified to suit the adolescent athlete while following the adult run clinic program. Pyramids, Intervals, and Hills are what we use to strengthen, increase speed and build endurance in our RACE TEAM members. We have been very impressed by the response of these young athletes.

The Race Team Members lead small groups in warm up for the KM Club, they have shown amazing will and stamina during sessions in difficult workouts and come back each week for more. They have been invited by other adult run clubs to join in their races and have developed friendships with everyone on the RT because they have running in common.

One of the coolest things about running is that all ages and abilities can do it together. There are very few sports where you line up to start a race and you have Professional and Olympic athletes side by side with you, starting and finishing the same distance. Our younger runners (KMC) feel this when they are led by the Race Team Mentors and are encouraged when they see each other outside of the run club.
